Blagaj comes down to one image that lingers: a sixteenth-century Ottoman tekke pressed against a limestone cliff, at the exact point where the Buna springs from the rock. This village of a few hundred inhabitants, six kilometres from Mostar, long functioned as a Sufi retreat before becoming a pilgrimage and tourist site in equal measure. The turquoise water of the spring, surprisingly cold even in summer, explains the journey on its own.

Half a day suffices, ideally combined with Mostar to justify the trip. Spring and autumn offer softer light and reasonable crowds; in July and August, tour coaches arrive by 10am. From Mostar, a taxi or hire car is essential, as public transport is virtually non-existent. Avoid restaurants installed directly opposite the tekke: prices are inflated and quality mediocre.
