Fátima is above all one of the world's most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites, built around the Marian apparitions of 1917. The town itself exists only for this sanctuary: the entire urban fabric gravitates around the Santuário de Fátima and its vast esplanade, capable of holding hundreds of thousands of the faithful. This is not a conventional cultural tourism destination, but a space for contemplation that deserves to be approached with that reality in mind.
The dates of 12–13 May and October concentrate considerable crowds—avoid them if you seek calm, embrace them if you want to experience the occasion. Half a day is more than enough to visit the Capelinha das Aparições and the adjacent museum. Fátima is easily reached by bus from Lisbon or Porto. The classic trap: lingering in the religious souvenir shops that encircle the sanctuary, which offer little of genuine interest.
