Fátima is above all one of the world's most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites, built around the Marian apparitions of 1917. The town itself exists only for this sanctuary: the entire urban fabric gravitates around the Santuário de Fátima and its vast esplanade, capable of holding hundreds of thousands of the faithful. This is not a conventional cultural tourism destination, but a space for contemplation that deserves to be approached with that reality in mind.
The dates of 12–13 May and October concentrate considerable crowds-avoid them if you seek calm, embrace them if you want to experience the occasion. Half a day is more than enough to visit the Capelinha das Aparições and the adjacent museum. Fátima is easily reached by bus from Lisbon or Porto. The classic trap: lingering in the religious souvenir shops that encircle the sanctuary, which offer little of genuine interest.

Landmark
