Ponte de Lima claims the title of Portugal's oldest town, founded in 1125 on the banks of the Lima. This slow, broad river structures the city around a Roman bridge still standing, bordered by centuries-old plane trees. The historic centre moves to the rhythm of a fortnightly market that has existed since the 12th century, without artificial folklore for tourists.

Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions for visiting, with two to three days sufficient to explore the surrounding Vinho Verde wine country. The town is walked from Jardim dos Terceiros down to the Lima's banks, but hiring a car remains essential to reach the manor houses hidden in the hills. Avoid the September Fair weekend if you seek tranquility: the town doubles in population within hours.
