Sortelha - Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata
Wikipedia (en) - CC BY-SA

Sortelha is a fortified village deep in Portugal's interior, perched in the Serra da Malcata with medieval walls still encircling a handful of inhabited houses. Time moves differently here: the granite lanes, the quiet, and views across the surrounding plains create the impression of a place that has resisted modernisation effortlessly. It ranks among the historic villages of Beira Interior, less crowded than Monsanto or Piódão, which remains its chief strength.

Two to three hours will get you round the village and up to the keep, but an overnight stay lets you savour the atmosphere once the day-trippers leave. Best visited April to June or in September, when heat stays manageable. A car is essential; public transport doesn't reach the village. Don't limit yourself to the main square around O Celta restaurant—the lesser-visited northern ramparts offer the finest landscape views.
