MAP · OVERVIEW
Andorre-la-Vieille is a capital that fits into a handful of streets, wedged between mountains rising above 2,000 metres. Its historic centre, the Barri Antic, preserves a handful of stone houses from the 12th century clustered around the Casa de la Vall, the former parliament. The city functions as a crossroads between two cultures, predominantly Catalan, with a tax status that has shaped its economy far more than its architecture.
Spring and autumn offer genuine comfort for visiting without the crowds of ski season or summer shopping tourism. Two to three days suffice comfortably to explore the city and its immediate surroundings. You can walk around the centre, but a bus or hire car becomes useful for reaching the valleys. Avoid coming solely for the duty-free shops on Avinguda Meritxell: that's the classic trap that makes you miss the real Andorra.
