MAP · OVERVIEW
Varna strikes a rare balance between an industrious port city and an unapologetic seaside resort. Its centre conceals the Cathedral of the Assumption and an archaeological museum housing the world's oldest worked gold treasure, dated to 4500 BCE. This historical depth contrasts with the lively terraces along Slivnitsa Boulevard, giving the city a character difficult to categorise.
The best period runs from late May through early July, before nearby Sunny Beach saturates the region with mass tourism. Two to three days suffice to explore the city on foot, supplemented by local trolleybuses for outlying quarters. Don't confine yourself to the waterfront: the hinterland, especially Varna Park and Varna Lake, offers a far truer reading of the actual city.
