What to see in Fribourg ?

Freiburg im Breisgau lives at its own pace, between the Rhine and the Black Forest. Germany's sunniest university city has developed a cycling and local-market culture that genuinely structures daily life. Its Bächle, these small channels that run through the cobbled streets of the centre, have served as landmarks for residents since the Middle Ages. Freiburg's cathedral, its pierced spire dominating Münsterplatz, remains the gravitational point of the entire historic quarter.

Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the town and venturing towards the Feldberg or the Kaiserstuhl vineyards. Two days suffice for the centre, three if you plan a Black Forest excursion. The train from Basel or Stuttgart is the most convenient option. Avoid the Christmas market if you're after authenticity: the town deserves far more than this packaged version of itself.
