The country

Germany is a federal state of 16 Länder, each with its own government. With around 84 million inhabitants, it is the most populous country in the European Union.

The country stretches from the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts in the north to the Alps, where the Zugspitze, its highest peak, reaches 2,962 m. Around a third of the country is forested, and there are more than 10,000 lakes. The Rhine, the Danube and the Elbe are its main rivers.

When to go

Germany has a temperate climate, with rain spread throughout the year: winters are mild, from 2 to −6°C, and summers warm, from 18 to 20°C.

Summer school holidays are staggered between the Länder, from 20 June to 15 September, to spread out departures and demand for accommodation in holiday areas; Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg go last. In Munich, Oktoberfest starts on the first Saturday after 15 September and runs until the first Sunday in October; hotels near the grounds are often fully booked months in advance.

Getting around

The Deutschland-Ticket, sold only as a monthly subscription, gives access throughout Germany to buses, underground trains, S-Bahn and regional trains; it is not valid on Deutsche Bahn long-distance trains (ICE, IC, EC). The subscription can be cancelled monthly: to end it at the end of a month, cancel by the 10th at the latest.

Hozy tip

On long-distance routes, Sparpreis tickets are tied to the booked trains, whose numbers are printed on the ticket. If a delay of at least 20 minutes is expected on arrival for a journey within Germany, this restriction is lifted: the same ticket is then valid on all Deutsche Bahn long-distance (ICE, IC/EC) and regional trains.
