Germany plays by its own rules: train timetables are treated as gospel, bakeries open before 7am, and every region fiercely defends its own identity. Bavaria is not Berlin, and Hamburg has nothing in common with Cologne. This federalism, embedded in daily habits, makes the country far more varied than it looks from the outside.

Geographically, the country stretches from the North Sea and Baltic coasts to the Bavarian Alps. In between: the northern plain, the forests of Thuringia, the Rhine valley, the Swabian plateau. The major cities - Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Leipzig - each have a distinct character, but mid-sized towns like Freiburg im Breisgau, Erfurt or Regensburg deserve just as much attention.
