Renaissance fortified village 12 km from Lecce, perched and surrounded by moats, with views across the Salento plain to the sea. Founded from scratch in 1506 to a perfect grid plan, it's a remarkably rare example of Renaissance urbanism in southern Italy. Nearly deserted on weekdays, the atmosphere is one of haunting, eerie fascination.
