What to visit in Italy?

21 cities curated by Hozy · 497+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.

Italy runs by its own rules of time: an espresso is drunk standing at the bar in three minutes, but a Sunday meal can last four hours without anyone glancing at a watch. That particular relationship with slowness and care - in cooking, in craftsmanship, in conversation - is what really sets the country apart, far more than its museums or ruins.

The peninsula covers very different realities depending on where you are. The North takes in the Alps, the Po plain and cities like Turin, Milan or Bologna, with a dense industrial and food culture. The Centre, around Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches, offers countryside worked over centuries. The South - Calabria, Puglia, Basilicata - and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia run on a different logic, slower, drier, often ignored by classic circuits.

Good to know

When to go

April-May and September-October are the best windows: reasonable temperatures, lighter crowds and favourable light. July-August still works in the Dolomites or Sardinia, but Rome and Florence become stifling and overloaded.

Getting around

The Trenitalia and Italo network covers the north-south corridor well as far as Naples. Beyond that - Puglia, Calabria, inland Sicily - a car becomes essential. Avoid renting one in the big cities: the ZTL (limited traffic zones) trigger automatic fines that are hard to contest from abroad.

Hozy tip

In trattorias without a posted menu, ask for the 'piatto del giorno' before reading the card. That unlisted dish usually matches what the cook bought that morning - higher quality, lower price.
