Bergen lives under rain-locals know it and accept it with a certain pride. A former Hanseatic capital, the city built its wealth on the trade in dried cod, and the coloured wooden facades of the Bryggen still carry that mercantile memory. The quarter is UNESCO-listed, but it remains lived-in and animated, far from a mere backdrop.

The best period falls between June and August, when daylight lasts until midnight and compensates for the weather's whims. Two days will let you explore the Bryggen, take the funicular up Fløyen and stroll along the Torget fish market. Avoid the latter when cruise coaches arrive: prices double and the atmosphere vanishes. Bergen is easily reached from Oslo by overnight train-an option worth the detour in itself.
