Sintra - Convento dos Capuchos

Sintra trades on a particular atmosphere: dense forest, near-constant humidity and palaces that seem dropped there by accident. The Palácio da Pena, with its gaudy colours and composite architecture, rather sums up a town that has always favoured eccentricity over restraint. Once the Portuguese royal summer residence, it has retained a human scale that Lisbon lost long ago.

Spring and autumn offer the best conditions, before tour coaches clog the streets between June and August. Allow a full day from Lisbon; the direct train from Rossio takes forty minutes. The classic mistake is sticking to the Palácio da Pena and missing the Quinta da Regaleira, whose gardens and initiatic wells deserve as much attention. Also avoid the tuk-tuks rattling through the centre-they're needless over a distance easily covered on foot.
