What to see in Liège ?
24 places curated by Hozy - landmarks, nature, hidden restaurants and activities.
Liège lives up to its reputation as a forthright city and makes no apologies. Wedged between the Meuse and the Ardennes hills, it forged its character in metallurgy, resistance, and a particular idea of festivity. The Outremeuse quarter, with its noisy terraces and second-hand booksellers, embodies better than anything else this popular energy that distinguishes Liège from the well-mannered cities of the flatlands.
The city is best visited in spring or September, when the Meuse quays are passable without crowds. Two days are enough to grasp its essence, beginning with the Batte market on Sunday morning. A train from Brussels or Cologne is the obvious choice; a car quickly becomes a problem in the city centre. Avoid reducing Liège to the Boverie museum alone: the city lives chiefly in its neighbourhood cafés, not in its institutions.
