Namur sits at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse with obvious defensive logic: the Citadel looming over the city for centuries isn't decoration, it's the explanation of its entire history. Capital of Wallonia, it functions at a human scale that Brussels lost long ago, with a dense pedestrian centre around rue de l'Ange and residents who still know their shopkeepers.
Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the city and its surroundings along the Meuse. Two days suffice to cover it thoroughly. The train from Brussels takes fifty minutes and remains the straightforward option. Don't limit your visit to the Citadel alone: old Namur below it, around the Cathedral of Saint-Aubain, merits equal attention.
