Tongeren - Béguinage de Tongres
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Tongres is Belgium's oldest city, founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC. This heritage still shows in the street pattern and in the vestiges of Gallo-Roman ramparts that partially encircle the centre. Notre-Dame basilica, with its exceptional treasury, and the Sunday morning flea market give the town a dual character: archaeological and living.

Two days will explore Tongres without rushing, ideally in spring or autumn when the town settles into its proper rhythm. Less than an hour from Brussels or Liège by car. Don't limit yourself to the Gallo-Roman museum alone, solid though it is: Tongres' true character emerges in its shopping streets and neighbourhood cafés, far from organised circuits.
