MAP · OVERVIEW

Nicosia is Europe's last divided capital, split in two since 1974 by the UN's Green Line. This visible fracture along Ledra Street gives the city a particular tension, with Greek and Turkish neighbourhoods facing each other without quite communicating. The historic centre, ringed by 16th-century Venetian walls, concentrates a dense local life that hurried visitors often miss.

Spring (March-May) remains the most pleasant period, before the dry heat that crushes the city in July-August. Two days are enough to explore the centre on foot and cross the passage point on Ledra Street northwards. Avoid hiring a car for Nicosia alone: parking is a nightmare and everything is done on foot. Don't spend all your time on the southern side: the Büyük Han neighbourhood to the north is worth the effort.
