MAP · OVERVIEW
Annecy is built around a glacial lake whose waters remain among the clearest in Europe, and this geographical reality dictates the rhythm of the entire city. Old Annecy, traversed by the Thiou canal, blends 16th-century Savoyard architecture with still-authentic neighbourhood life, far from being mere scenery. The Palais de l'Isle, set in the middle of the water, has become the city's symbol without ever losing its function as a place of memory.
The best period falls between May and June, before the summer rush transforms the alleyways into crowded corridors. Two days are enough to explore the old town and cycle along the lake-the preferred means of transport for locals. Avoid driving around the lake in July and August: traffic on the D909 destroys any pleasure. Better instead to take the boat from the Jetée des Marquisats to discover the shoreline without constraint.
