What to see in Bayeux ?
16 places curated by Hozy - landmarks, nature, hidden restaurants and activities.
MAP · OVERVIEW
Bayeux amounts to one street and a tapestry. This Norman town emerged from the Second World War almost entirely intact, which preserved for it a coherent medieval centre, rare in the region. The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Bayeux dominates the slate roofs with quiet authority, and the Bayeux Tapestry-an eleventh-century embroidery, not a tapestry-recounts the conquest of England with a precision that still surprises historians.
Two days is ample, or even one day if you go straight on to the D-Day beaches twenty minutes' drive away. Come in spring or September: summer brings school groups that cram the Tapestry museum by 10am. Book your time slot online in advance. Avoid restaurants around the cathedral, formatted for passing tourism-the best places are on the side streets.
