MAP · OVERVIEW
Bonifacio perches on the southernmost tip of Corsica, clinging to white limestone cliffs that drop sheer into the sea. The upper town, ringed by Genoese ramparts, has retained a rare architectural coherence: narrow streets, tall houses that seem to lean into the void, and the Sainte-Marie-Majeure church at the heart of a maze of covered passageways. It is a town at the world's edge, with all that implies of deliberate isolation and uncompromising character.
The best time to visit falls between May and June, or in September, when the summer crowds loosen their grip on the marina and cave-access boats. Two days suffice to explore the citadel and reach the Bouches of Bonifacio by boat from the lower port. In July and August, abandon any hope of finding street parking; leave your car in the peripheral car parks and walk down. Skip the quayside café terraces, calibrated for rushed tourists-head back up to the upper town for something genuine.
