MAP · OVERVIEW
Bonnieux occupies a rocky spur of the Luberon in a layout built against wind and invasion, not to please visitors. The streets climb towards the twelfth-century Vieille Église without warning, houses close around interior courtyards, and Friday's market remains a gathering of local producers rather than a folkloric showpiece. This is a living village, which sets it apart from its more touristed neighbours.
The best period runs from mid-April to June or September to October, when the light is crisp and crowds manageable. Two days suffice to explore the village and venture towards the Pont Julien, an intact Roman bridge three kilometres away that warrants the journey. You'll need a car-there is no serious alternative. The classic pitfall: confining yourself to the main street and missing the hidden terraces overlooking the Petit Luberon.
