MAP · OVERVIEW
Bouillante takes its name from the hot springs that rise up from the volcanic depths of Basse-Terre, and this active geology is evident everywhere: in the fumaroles piercing the forest, in the warm water of the coves, in the density of the national park encircling it. This isn't a picture-postcard village-it's a base camp for divers and hikers after Guadeloupe without the gloss of Saint-François.
The Cousteau Reserve, off the islet of Pigeon, remains the principal reason to come here, and it amply rewards the journey-though book early, as the spots fill quickly in high season (December–April). Plan on two to three days in situ, with a hire car from Pointe-à-Pitre as public transport is unreliable. Avoid the snorkelling packages hawked on the quay: they skim over zones already exhausted by boat traffic.
