Cabourg - Promenade Marcel Proust
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Cabourg was built in the nineteenth century according to a fan-shaped plan radiating from the Grand Hôtel, and this geometry remains legible in every street. The town owes part of its reputation to Marcel Proust, who spent each summer here and made it the model for Balbec in In Search of Lost Time. This literary past lends the seafront an particular atmosphere, hovering between bourgeois retreat and gentle nostalgia.

The best period runs from June through early September, when the fine sand beach is pleasant without August's crowds. Two to three days suffice to explore the Marcel-Proust promenade and the Belle Époque villas of the town centre. You'll arrive by car from Caen, twenty minutes away, or by Nomad coach from the station. Avoid the Romantic Film Festival weekend if you're seeking tranquillity: the town doubles in population within hours.
