Caen embodies a productive contradiction: a city rebuilt 75 per cent after 1944, it owns its 1950s architecture without apology, whilst retaining the Abbaye aux Hommes and William the Conqueror's castle as witnesses to a dense Norman past. This is not a postcard city; it is a city of substance, where the Mémorial de Caen imposes a rare historical honesty.

Spring and autumn offer genuine comfort for visiting, summer being saturated by D-Day circuit tours. Two days suffice for the city, three if you venture towards the Calvados beaches. Cycling works well thanks to the flat network of the centre. Avoid packaged "D-Day by bus" offers that skim everything: sites like Omaha Beach merit time, not a twenty-minute photo stop.
