What to see in Colmar?

26 places curated by Hozy - landmarks, nature, hidden restaurants and activities.

MAP · OVERVIEW

Colmar is not a frozen postcard backdrop: it is an Alsatian town that actually lives within its timber-framed houses in the Little Venice quarter, among geranium-bordered canals and alleys where residents still shop in the morning. The town carries five centuries of Franco-German history without turning itself into a museum, and the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum remains one of Europe's most arresting works, often underestimated.

The best period falls between May and June, before the summer influx, or on weekdays during the Christmas market to avoid weekend crowds. Two days suffice to explore the town on foot, the only sensible way to navigate the historic centre. Avoid restaurants displaying menus translated into six languages around Little Venice: the decent Alsatian tables lie one street further on.
