Eguisheim is one of Alsace's best-preserved villages, built in concentric rings around its 13th-century octagonal château. The cobbled streets of the Grand-Rue curve back on themselves, lined with half-timbered houses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. The village is also serious wine country, with independent vintners working the grand cru Eichberg and Pfersigberg slopes, as they have for generations.
The best period falls between May and October, outside the Christmas market weekends that turn the village into a human traffic jam. Budget a half-day on site — two hours is enough for the complete circuit on foot from the car park on the edge of town. Avoid arriving by car on a Sunday afternoon in season: the narrow streets aren't designed for traffic, and the tasting cellars deserve time to linger.
