Gordes - Château de Gordes
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Gordes owes its reputation to its silhouette: a village of honey-coloured stone perched on a rocky spur of the Luberon, its streets climbing in steps towards a 16th-century Renaissance château. This is no fabricated backdrop—it's vernacular architecture that has withstood time, reinforced by the presence of the Village des Bories, an ensemble of dry-stone cabins dating back centuries.

The best period runs from late April to June, before heat and tour coaches saturate the narrow streets. Two days suffice to explore the village and its immediate surroundings. You'll need a car; there's no realistic alternative. The classic pitfall: arriving on a summer Sunday morning when the car park is overflowing and terraces are turning people away. Better to aim for a weekday arrival, arriving early.
