Kaysersberg derives its character from a rare equilibrium between intact Alsatian village and living town year-round. Built around a ruined medieval castle dominating the valley, it owes its renown also to Albert Schweitzer, born here in 1875. The half-timbered houses of the centre, lining the Weiss, are no reconstructed façade: they are inhabited, maintained, real.
The ideal period falls between May and October, outside the Christmas market that draws disproportionate crowds for a village of this size. Two days amply suffice to explore the town and venture into the neighbouring Wine Route vineyards. Arrive by car from Colmar, twenty minutes away, or by shuttle from the station. Avoid Advent weekends: the narrow streets become impassable and the experience loses all authenticity.
