What to see in La Rochelle?

22 places curated by Hozy - landmarks, nature, hidden restaurants and activities.

MAP · OVERVIEW

La Rochelle derives its character from the tension between sea and stone. The arcades of Rue du Palais shelter from wind as much as from sun, and the Old Harbour structures the city's life far beyond tourism. A Protestant city, a city of privateers, a city of resistance-its history is legible in the architecture without needing to look for it.

The best period falls between May and June, before the summer influx saturates the quays and doubles restaurant prices. Two days are enough to grasp the essentials, three if you venture out to the Île de Ré by bike. Don't hire a car: the centre is pedestrianised and bike-share schemes cover the essentials. Don't eat on the port itself-the tables facing the Saint-Nicolas and Chain towers are beautiful, but the food is often mediocre.
