What to see in Lille ?

Lille draws its singularity from a double heritage: assured Flemish architecture, with its red-brick façades and stepped gables around the Grand'Place, and the energy of a major northern city that rivals any capital. The city has managed to reinvent itself after deindustrialisation without erasing its traces, which gives it a rare urban texture, somewhere between hidden courtyards and repurposed industrial spaces.
Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for visiting; summer remains cool and lively. Two days are enough to cover the historic centre and the Wazemmes quarter, provided you arrive by train-Lille-Flandres station is an hour from Paris. Avoid concentrating your visit on the Grand'Place on a Sunday morning: the terraces are packed and the experience loses authenticity.
