Lourmarin is a Luberon village that has managed to remain inhabited year-round, giving it a density many Provençal villages have lost. Its Renaissance castle, one of the rare ones in Provence, overlooks the rooftops without dominating the rest. Albert Camus is buried in the communal cemetery here, and this discreet presence says something about the character of the place: cultivated, without ostentation.
Spring and early autumn provide the best conditions for visiting, before the heat or July crowds saturate the narrow streets. A day is enough to see it all, but an overnight stay allows you to watch the village empty in the evening. You get there by car from Aix-en-Provence or Apt; public transport is unreliable. Avoid the Friday market simply for shopping: it mainly attracts tourists, not locals.
