Menton occupies a peculiar corner of the Riviera: wedged between Italy and Monaco, it has developed an identity distinctly its own-neither quite French nor altogether Italian. The old town, with its ochre and lemon-yellow façades, climbs towards the Basilica of Saint-Michel, and the market at the Halles du Quai de Monléon still carries the transalpine accent of its traders. The city lives by the rhythm of the lemon-its local variety is cultivated nowhere else-and this obsession lends the place an unexpected coherence.
September and October offer the best window: the heat is bearable, the August tourists have departed, and gardens like the Villa Maria Serena remain open. Two days suffice to explore the town on foot; the regional train from Nice is quick and avoids the coastal gridlock. Skip the Lemon Festival in February if you're after peace and quiet-hotels triple their rates for an event aimed chiefly at families.
