Nîmes - Temple de Diane
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Nîmes occupies a singular position in France: a city of the deep South whose heartbeat is Roman. The Arènes and the Maison Carrée are not museumified ruins-they still structure the daily life of residents, who eat, protest and live around them. This proximity between the ancient and the living gives the city a density that few French cities possess.

Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions, before the dry July heat turns stone into an oven. Two days suffice to cover the historic centre on foot-the only truly coherent way to move about here. Don't concentrate your stay on Roman monuments alone: the Écusson quarter, with its alleyways and markets, reveals a less expected and considerably more honest city.
