What to see in Obernai?

MAP · OVERVIEW

Obernai is an Alsatian town that has managed to remain itself despite its tourist success. Its half-timbered houses from the sixteenth century around the market square are not reconstructed for visitors: they have always been there, inhabited, alive. The town lives to the rhythm of its vineyards, the weekly market and a well-rooted regional pride.

The best period to visit is spring or autumn, outside the Christmas market season that saturates the streets and drives up prices. Two days suffice to explore the town and venture towards Mont Sainte-Odile, a pilgrimage site perched a few kilometres away. Reach it by car or train from Strasbourg, twenty minutes away. Avoid restaurants displaying menus translated into five languages in the window: they live off passing trade, not cooking.
