Rennes draws its character from the coexistence of a half-timbered old town clustered around place des Lices and a university campus that feeds into every neighbourhood. The city burnt in 1720, which explains why the centre mixes medieval architecture that survived with dressed stone buildings from the eighteenth century-a patchwork legible on the ground rather than in guidebooks.
September and October offer the best window: the heat has dropped, students have returned, and terraces stay open. Two days suffice to explore the Thabor quarter and the Lices market hall on a Saturday morning. The TGV from Paris takes 1h25; a car is pointless once you're there. Avoid crêperies stationed on the tourist thoroughfares of the centre-the best galettes are two streets over, with no neon sign.
