Ribeauvillé draws its character from this tension between three ruined castles overlooking the Alsatian plain from the Vosges ridges and a main street, the Grand'Rue, that has shown no urge to modernise. The town long lived under the authority of the lords of Ribeaupierre, and this feudal history still reads in the architecture of the half-timbered houses and in the path of alleys climbing towards the heights.
Spring and autumn offer the best conditions: the light is sharp, tour coaches fewer than in summer. Two days suffice to explore the town and climb to the ruins of Girsberg. From Colmar, twenty minutes by car or bike along the wine route cycle path. Skip the Pfifferdaj weekend in September if you seek calm, or come for the festival if village celebration appeals to you.
