Rocamadour clings to a cliff face. The village literally grips the rock of the Alzou canyon, stacking its houses, chapels and Marian shrine across several levels connected by a staircase of 216 steps. This twelfth-century pilgrimage site draws visitors as much for its vertical architecture as for the Chapel of Notre-Dame and its Black Madonna, venerated for centuries by believers from across Europe.

Spring and autumn offer the best conditions: soft light, reasonable crowds and the canyon still verdant. Half a day on site suffices; a full day if you explore the surrounding area on foot. A car remains essential in this corner of the Lot. Don't confine yourself to the main commercial street: climb to the castle for an overview of the village's levels-that's where everything makes sense.
