Saint-Rémy-de-Provence amounts to a handful of narrow streets lined with plane trees and a light that became an obsession for Van Gogh. The town operates at two speeds: the Wednesday morning market on Place de la République, frequented by locals for centuries, and the tourist flow that drifts towards the Antiques and the archaeological site of Glanum, a discreet Graeco-Roman remnant dense in history.
Spring (April–May) and autumn offer an unbeatable quality-to-crowds ratio; summer transforms the centre into perpetual gridlock. Two days suffice to explore the town and its immediate surroundings, preferably by bicycle—the Alpilles are easily accessible from the centre. Don't spend too much time in the soap and lavender sachet shops: they consume half a day without yielding anything worthwhile.
