MAP · OVERVIEW

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence amounts to a handful of narrow streets lined with plane trees and a light that became an obsession for Van Gogh. The town operates at two speeds: the Wednesday morning market on Place de la République, frequented by locals for centuries, and the tourist flow that drifts towards the Antiques and the archaeological site of Glanum, a discreet Graeco-Roman remnant dense in history.

Spring (April–May) and autumn offer an unbeatable quality-to-crowds ratio; summer transforms the centre into perpetual gridlock. Two days suffice to explore the town and its immediate surroundings, preferably by bicycle-the Alpilles are easily accessible from the centre. Don't spend too much time in the soap and lavender sachet shops: they consume half a day without yielding anything worthwhile.
