Talloires is a village of 1,500 people squeezed between Lake Annecy and the Roc de Chère cliff—a geography that's anything but coincidental. Cézanne planted his easel here in 1896. The eleventh-century Benedictine abbey, now converted into a hotel, sets the tone of a place that has always attracted those seeking calm over commotion.

May to June offers the best window, before pedalo rentals overrun the shore and prices double. Two days are more than enough, unless you're here for sailing or lake diving. It's a twenty-minute drive from Annecy by car; public transport is impractical. Skip the most visible lakeside restaurant—it trades on its terrace, not its cooking.
