Tours - Place Plumereau
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Tours occupies a central position in the Loire Valley, between vineyards and châteaux, but the city deserves a visit for its own sake. Its medieval centre around Place Plumereau concentrates dense neighbourhood life, sustained by a large student population that keeps the cafés and markets genuinely busy year-round. Renaissance architecture in the Vieux-Tours sits alongside serious gastronomy, rooted in Chinonais and Touraine produce.

Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions: the vineyards are active and tour coaches fewer than in July. Two days will explore the town on foot before you cycle or catch local trains towards the châteaux. Avoid the "châteaux by coach" packages that swallow three sites in a day without giving you time to understand any of them.
