MAP · OVERVIEW

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a Bavarian medieval town whose 14th-century ramparts are intact-a rarity in central Europe. It owes its preservation to a quirk of history: too impoverished to modernise after the Thirty Years' War, it froze its urban fabric in amber. The Plönlein, that half-timbered crossroads photographed for decades, perfectly captures this atmosphere suspended between two eras.

Allow a full day, two if you want to walk the ramparts at leisure and explore the Kriminalmuseum without rushing. September and October offer raking light that complements the golden stone of the façades, without summer crowds. Arrive ideally by train from Würzburg or Nuremberg, then move about on foot-the car is unnecessary within the walls. Avoid the centre between 11am and 3pm in July-August: coach parties make the visit difficult to appreciate.
