La Crète n'est pas une île grecque parmi d'autres : c'est une civilisation à part entière. Le palais de Knossos rappelle que les Minoens bâtissaient des villes complexes quand l'Europe du Nord dormait encore sous les forêts. Entre les gorges de Samaria et les villages de la Sfakia, l'île garde une identité rugueuse, fière, qui résiste au tourisme de masse sans l'ignorer.
Le printemps (avril-mai) et l'automne (septembre-octobre) offrent la lumière et les températures les plus justes pour explorer l'intérieur des terres. Comptez dix jours minimum pour dépasser la côte nord. Une voiture de location est indispensable : les bus desservent mal l'arrière-pays. Évitez les tavernes du front de mer à Héraklion - elles vivent du passage, pas de la cuisine.
