The country

Greece has around 6,000 islands and islets, of which only 227 islands are inhabited. The national tourism organisation groups them into eight areas: the Argo-Saronic islands, Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Evia, the Ionian islands, the North Aegean islands and the Sporades.

On the mainland, the Peloponnese is home to Nafplio, the first capital of the new Greek state until 1834, and Mystras, which grew up below a fortress built in 1249 and became a centre of Byzantine power in southern Greece; its archaeological site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1989.

When to go

The climate is Mediterranean: mild, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and plenty of sunshine for most of the year. The year divides into two seasons: a cold, rainy season from mid-October to the end of March, and a warm, dry season from April to October. The hottest period runs from late July to early August, with average highs of 29 to 35°C, tempered on the coasts by sea breezes and, in the Aegean, by the etesian winds, the meltemi. The climate is dry in Attica and the east, and wetter in the north and west.

Spring is short; autumn is long and warm, and in the south it often lasts until mid-December. Winter is milder on the Aegean and Ionian islands than in the north and east; the mountains are usually snow-covered, and Mount Parnassus is home to the country's largest ski resort.

Getting around

Piraeus, Europe's largest passenger port, is the main link between the mainland, the Aegean islands and Crete; together with Rafina, it serves the Aegean, Saronic and Cretan routes. For the Ionian islands, ferries leave from Patras, Kyllini, Igoumenitsa and Astakos. By rail, Hellenic Train runs daily between Athens and Thessaloniki, via Livadeia, Larissa and Katerini.
