Greece runs at two speeds: the islands in July, overloaded with tourists and white light, and the mainland, much less visited, where tavernas still close whenever the owner decides. This gap between the Greece that's sold and the Greece that's lived is precisely what makes the country endearing. Athens, often treated as a stopover, deserves two full days - the Monastiraki district, the Varvakios market, the slopes of Exarcheia give a far truer reading of the country than any archaeological site.
The territory splits into several travel logics: northern Greece with Macedonia and Thrace, dense with Byzantine history and smoked-meat cooking; the Peloponnese, reachable by car from Athens, with Nafplio and the ruins of Mystras; and finally the archipelago, which is not monolithic - the Cyclades, the Dodecanese around Rhodes, and the Ionian islands like Corfu or Kefalonia run on very different moods and seasons.

The ferry is unavoidable for the islands: Piraeus is the main hub, with lines to the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese. On the mainland, a rental car is still the most efficient option - the rail network, run by Hellenic Train, mostly covers the Athens-Thessaloniki corridor.
In Greek tavernas, the plasticised photo menu is almost always a tourist trap. Ask what they've got today - the unlisted daily dish, often cooked slowly in the morning, is consistently better and cheaper.
