Bellagio occupies the tip of the triangle formed by Lake Como at its bifurcation, giving it a rare geographical position: you can see three arms of the lake from a single vantage point. The village has retained its steep stone staircases, ochre facades and terraced gardens—notably those of Villa Melzi—without transforming into a frozen stage set for tourists.
The best period runs from late April to June, before ferries become rammed and the quays impassable. Two days amply suffice to explore the village and reach Varenna by boat, the crossing taking less than fifteen minutes. Avoid arriving by car: parking is virtually non-existent and the alleyways aren't suited to vehicles.
