Bolzano occupies a singular position in Europe: an Italian city of German speakers, squeezed between the Dolomites and the Austrian Tyrol, it operates by its own cultural rules. The covered market at Piazza delle Erbe and the South Tyrolean Museum of Archaeology, where Ötzi the Iceman rests, neatly summarise this double heritage—Latin in the morning, Germanic at the dinner table.
The best period lies between May and June or in September, before the summer influx of hikers. Two days are enough for the city itself, longer if you plan to reach the mountain huts by the Renon cable car. Avoid concentrating your visit on the pedestrian centre on a Sunday: most shops close and the city loses much of its daily animation.
