Milan operates at a pace other Italian cities simply don't match. This is where fashion is negotiated, where major enterprises are financed, where contemporary art is exhibited-and yet the Duomo and the Brera district remind you the city has centuries of layers beneath its feet. Milan doesn't court first impressions: it has to be earned.
September and October offer pleasant weather without the summer crush. Two days cover the essentials; three if you want to book in for Leonardo's Last Supper-essential viewing, and slots vanish weeks in advance. The metro efficiently covers the centre. Don't spend all your time around the Duomo: it's the most touristy sector and least representative of what Milan genuinely has to offer.
