Procida - Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo
Wikipedia (it) - CC BY-SA

Procida is the smallest of the islands in the Gulf of Naples, and the least formatted for mass tourism. Its ochre and pink houses stacked around the Marina Corricella harbour aren't a reconstructed set: fishermen still live here, nets dry on terraces, and nobody greets you with a menu in ten languages. The island served as backdrop to the film Il Postino, which gave it a belated recognition without disfiguring it.

The best window runs from May to June, before ferries from Naples dump weekend crowds. Three days is ample, even two if you don't need proper disconnection. Reach it from Naples or Pozzuoli by hydrofoil or slow ferry, depending on budget. Avoid hiring a scooter on a Saturday in August: the alleys around Piazzetta dei Martiri become impassable and you'll spend your time hunting for parking.
