MAP · OVERVIEW
Rimini is a dual city: one of Italy's most visited beach resorts and a Roman historic centre often overlooked by hurried tourists. The Arch of Augustus and the Bridge of Tiberius, both intact for two thousand years, stand twenty minutes' walk from the tightly-packed beach umbrellas. It's this tension between Antiquity and mass tourism that gives Rimini its distinctive character.
The best time to visit is May or September: the sea is swimmable, the city has breathing room. Allow two days if you're combining beach and old town. The train from Bologna takes forty minutes and remains the simplest method. Skip Rimini marina for dinner: the restaurants there are calibrated for groups and prices don't reflect quality.
