Alcobaça is often reduced to its monastery, but that would be shortsighted. The town lives to the rhythm of a deeply rooted ceramics and wine economy, well removed from the smooth circuits of coastal tourism. The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, founded in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, imposes a Gothic restraint that contrasts sharply with the Manueline exuberance of Batalha, twenty kilometres away.

Two hours suffice to see the essentials, but an overnight stay allows you to enjoy the town after the coaches depart. Come in spring or September: summer saturates the cloister with organised groups. From Lisbon, the Rodoviária bus is more practical than the train. Avoid restaurants pressed against the monastery entrance; prices are inflated without any corresponding quality on the plate.
