MAP · OVERVIEW
Batalha exists for one reason alone: the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória, built in the fourteenth century to celebrate a Portuguese military victory over the Castilians. This golden limestone monastery concentrates seven centuries of Gothic and Manueline architecture within a town of 8,000 inhabitants, creating a striking contrast between the scale of the monument and the town that surrounds it.
Allow half a day on the spot, ideally in spring or autumn to avoid the tour coaches that saturate the site in July and August. Batalha is easily visited from Leiria by car or regional bus, and fits naturally into a circuit with Alcobaça and Fátima. Don't limit yourself to the main façade: the Capelas Imperfeitas, accessible from outside, are often deserted and well worth the detour.
