MAP · OVERVIEW
Caldas da Rainha is a Portuguese provincial town that wears its working-class, artisanal character without apology. Founded in the fifteenth century around its thermal springs by Queen Leonor, it's built a strong identity around erotic and satirical ceramics-the famous ceramic cockerels and phalluses in the Museu de Cerâmica are a serious tradition here, not a souvenir gimmick. The Dom Afonso Henriques market, one of the oldest in the country, sets the tone: a town that works, that sells, that lives.
The best time to visit is between April and June, before the dry heat of summer sets in. Two days are enough to see it at leisure, combining a visit to Parque D. Carlos I with some shopping at the market. Caldas is easily reached from Lisbon by bus (roughly two hours), making it a good stop on the way to Óbidos or Nazaré. Don't just treat it as an annex to Óbidos next door: Caldas deserves a proper visit for its own sake, not as a convenient parking spot.
